Major Event Data Entry Guide – SportsDataIO

The following help center article will provide detailed insight on how SportsDataIO captures and updates data for “off field sporting events” such as professional drafts, Selection Sunday, bowl selections, etc. See our Depth Chart article to understand how depth charts are managed in the off season.

NFL Draft

The NFL Draft is covered live by our data operations team.

Pre-Draft Coverage - The data entry and collection process begin prior to the draft. We create player IDs and player profiles as athletes declare for the draft.

Live Draft Coverage – Player Profiles and Team Rosters are updated live as the draft unfolds. You can access updated rosters and player information via our Player Profile endpoints.

NFL Schedule Release

The NFL will release the schedule on a specific date which varies year-to-year but usually occurs late April or early May. Once the schedule is officially announced, our data operations team starts to match and update our records. We have the schedule populated within one day of the official NFL announcement and can be accessed via our Schedules Endpoint.

NBA Draft

The NBA Draft is covered live by our data operations team.

MLB Draft

The MLB Draft is not covered live. Following the MLB Draft, players are not guaranteed to sign with the major league team that drafted them. Players can go to college or accept a major league offer.

Once a drafted player signs with their MLB team we will assign their minor league or major league player status.

NHL Draft

The NHL Draft is not covered live. Following the NHL Draft, players are not guaranteed to sign with the major league team that drafted them. Players can go to college, choose to play international hockey, or accept an official NHL team offer.

Once a drafted player signs with their NHL team we will assign their minor league or major league player status.

NCAA Selection Sunday

Our NCAA March Madness brackets are pre-created 3 weeks earlier with Game ID’s. Prior to the team announcements, GameID will have teams listed as TBD.

On Selection Sunday, our Data Operations team sets the seeds for teams in real time as they are announced on the live broadcast. The Women’s College Basketball brackets are not updated live and will appear following the announcement of the entire bracket seeding.

The following round teams will display as TBD until both opponents are known.

NCAA Football Bowl Selection.

When the current season bowl scheduled is announced by the NCAA, SportsDataIO monitors for the announcement so we can create all bowl games within our Schedules endpoint for client to access.

Team selection per bowl game is not covered live. Shortly teams are announced for each bowl game, our data operations team review and update full bowl schedule.

Our CFB Playoff schedule will only update once games are finished, and all teams are known to populate the championship matchup.
